Timeline: Chapter 1- Huckleberry Finn introduces himself at the narrator of the book. He also tells us his past with Tom Sawyer. Chapter 2- Huck sneaks out into the widow's garden and almost got caught by the slave. This was actually Tom playing a prank on him. Chapter 3- The widow found out that Huck snuck out and makes him pray. He can't focus and fails. Chapter 4- Huck continues to try to adapt to his new lifestyle with Miss Watson and begins to do better in school. Chapter 5- Huck's pap does not want him going to school anymore. He also takes Huck's last dollar to go get drunk. Pap gets jailed for causing trouble in town because he wants more money from Huck. The new judge gives him a second chance and gives him a bed and a jacket. Pap sells the jacket for liquor, and the judge is fed up with him. Time period: Huckleberry Finn took place in around the 1830-1840's. Slavery was still going on at this time. It's important that Huck is the narrator because he's the main character. The story is better if it's told through his eyes and point of view.
Chapters 5-11 1. Pap locks Huck up in a cabin in the woods while he was drunk because Pap was mad about Huck attending school. Pap is scared that Huck is becoming better than him so he keeps him away from everything that is allowing him to have an education. 2. 3. An abolitionist means that you were in favor for ending slavery. Huck wasn't worried about being called one because slavery was a normal thing. He didn't want to attract attention by being called an abolitionist by other because Pap would be mad. 4. 1- Huck didn't walk like a girl according to Jim. 2- Huck's voice doesn't sound like a girl. 3- He told the women his name was Sarah, but then said it was Mary. 4- Huck doesn't know how to properly thread like women. 5. 1- Men have deeper voices. 2- Men have bigger shoulders and boy figures. 3- Men have a more defined jawline than women. 6. 1- Girls voices are more high pitched. 2- Girls move in a feminine way. 3- Girls are more curvy and have wider hips.
Chapters 12-16 1. In the story of King of Solomon, two of his wives were fighting over a baby and so to compromise he said that they would split the baby in half and eventually, one of the wives refused to let the baby be ripped in half so she gave the baby up to the other wife. Jim's reaction to this was ballistic. Jim thinks that King Solomon is crazy for even mentioning the idea of ripping apart a baby. 2. After the separation, Huck tells Jim he dreamed the whole thing and Jim believed him. After Jim saw all the debris, etc on the raft he realized they had actually gone through that and got mad at Huck for making a fool out of him. I feel like Jim is super naive and innocent and doesn't feel very confident in himself. I like him, but he needs "lots of attention" 3. He is scared because he is a slave who hasn't been freed and if he gets caught BAD things could happen!! 4. Huck is very stubborn but always, in the end does what he thinks is right. In this case, it was to apologize to someone who, at the time, wasn't "equal to him". This shows lots of humility. 5. When five men come to look for escaped slaves on Huck's boat he acts grateful and leads the men onto his boat saying that his family is suffering with smallpox. In fear of getting sick the men keep their distance; out of pity they give him 40 dollars in gold. He feels bad because he feels like he did the wrong things but decides he probably would have felt bad had he given away Jim.
Chapters 17-21 1. They have a deceased daughter names Emmeline. They are also currently in a feud with the Sheherdsons. The head of the family was Colonel Grangerford. He is a gentle and warmhearted man who owns a large estate. The children are Tom, Charlotte, Bob, Sophia, and Buck. Each child had their own slaves. No one really knows or remembers why or how the feud between the 2 families started. Sophia is in love with a boy named Henry who is a Sheperdson. Buck and a 19 year old Grangerford are in a gun fight with the Sherperdsons and they end up dying. 2. I think the reason that Mark Twain wrote this into a novel is because he wanted to show what is was like a the time to be a farmer and a rancher. Farmers and ranchers basically had to co-exist in that business even though they were rivals or they clashed together. This is the same with the novel because the Sheperdsons and the Grangerfords had to co-exist in church and then go back to their rivalry after. This shows that during that time, 2 occupations were very competitive with each other and also competing for the same customers. 3. Huck actually did care about the family that took him in. He didn't want to that place where he found them again. He also didn't want to face that grief this early. His friend died right in front of his face in the battle. This affected Huck greatly. Huck really admired the family whether is was the kind and gentle father or the fact they are an actual genuine family. It wasn't very easy for Huck to see that the feud took more lives. Huck could barely accept this. 4. The King and the Duke and 2 men that Huck came upon on one of his solo expeditions. Their clothes completely battered, and they were begging to be let on the raft to get away from trouble. One man which is the Duke, is 70 years old and bald. The other king was 30 years old. They are both con men. The "King" sold paste that took off tartar from teeth, but it took more than that. The locals were very furious. The "Duke" use to run a temperance revival, but others found out that he drank. They both sought help from Huck Finn. 5. The Duke's plan was to make it look like they have captured Jim. That means a way to "hold" him. This could make up for some troubles as they might have to prove that that they don't care for Jim, if any other ships comes upon them. We can anticipate that others would try to capture Jim for a reward. That would represent possible dangers for the crew. It would also affect Huck's conscience because he cares for Jim and wouldn't want Jim to suffer. 6.
Chapters 22-26 1. They were hoping to get the men's attention because that would cause much more men to come, and they would all support the same thing. They saw that the women and children aren't coming so they see more people like them that are attending, making them want to join. 2. A. Jim didn't know much about dukes and kings so he's probably confused, and them going along with them is helping Jim not get caught. B. Jim would still be confused just by the way the king and the duke act compared to the real thing which is not a big difference besides the fact that they aren't actually kings and dukes. 3. Huck felt ashamed because the duke and king didn't care about all the people they were using for their gain at all. They even went too far and used a dead person. 4. The duke and the king weren't convincing the doctor enough that they were who they claim. The doctor noticed that what they claimed to be were not how they acted or seemed like. For example, the doctor said that they duke had the worst british accent that he had ever heard. 5. Like we already know, the duke and the king basically did anything to gain wealth for themselves. They already had a ton of money in gold, and were planning on leaving with the money. They decided to wait to leave though for the possibility of making more money. They thought if they waited to leave, they could sell slaves and make money.
Chapters 27-30 1. 1. They kept the rodents away, and they stayed with the dead because there weren't people to preserve the body so people that were close to the person that died would stay with the corpse because it was their responsibility 2.During this time period of the novel we are reaffirmed about Huck's good and carring heart. Huck saw that Mary Jane was that the slaves families were being separated and he could tell that she was extremely upset about the death because he saw her crying next to the casket. He was trying to make her feel better by saying that it wouldn't be for long. Once again, this shows the kindness that Huck has displayed throughout the book. 3. The townspeople a signature test to find the frauds by making all four men do signatures then comparing them to the old signatures. Then, the King said it was not accurate because Harvey's hand was broken and it was not fair to compare it because it would not prove anything. Also, the real Harvey brought up tattoos that Pete had but then the man who dressed the body says there were no tattoos. Chapter 31-35 1. Huck was praying to ask for forgiveness for helping Jim escape from Ms.Watson. Back in then it was illegal to help a run away slave cross over into the free-lands, but Huck's heart was not into the prayer for God because his heart was not in it. There for Huck was lying because he has become very close with Jim and wanted to help him finally become free and that is why he says You can't pray a lie. 2. Huck felt guilty and he knew if he wrote a letter to Ms. Watson, she would just sell Jim. He doesn't want to feel ashamed of helping a black man escape because it was illegal. 3. Huck was surprised that Tom was on his side. Tom was white too so even though Tom was in a "gang" he didn't believe that Tom would help a slave because of how illegal it was and the fact that most whites just see black people as slaves made Huck wonder why Tom would help a slave. But of course Tom was always up for an adventure or something crazy and to think about it, doing this would be a big risk that nobody really ever takes so that may be disappointing that he would do something so bad. 4. I think by these two statements he is kind of saying that people can see or know about something bad but do nothing to change it if it doesn't effect them. Also, they do things for their own gain without worrying about hurting or effecting anyone else so huck is disappointed in people because they don't really understand what they are doing and what the effects on what they are doing or what they know about are. 5. That is all Tom, obviously Tom has a record of doing bad things, but never in a simple way so when Huck had a simple plan to free Jim, Tom wanted to "make it more stylish". They also wanted people to be more mysterious about how he escaped. By doing these things it would maybe help cover up their tracks as being the ones who helped him escape. They needed to make sure that all of them walked out free and safe. Chapter 36-40 1. Huck is praying about a lie he has been telling to himself to make him feel better about taking Jim away from Miss Watson and helping him escape slavery. He was very upset and under a lot of distress because because Jim was caught whenever the reward posters were still all up. The man who caught Jim took 4 dollars instead of the promised 200 dollars. Huck was very upset about Jim being caught. Because of this, he was trying to think of ways to help Jim escape. He was going to write Miss Watson a letter that stated where Jim was at, but he decided not to because it would put Jim in a bad spot since he would be helping a runaway slave. Huck was also praying about what to do. He wanted to pray hat he wouldn't do anymore bad things, but he knew that he would in the future. 2. Huck was going to write to Tom Sawyer to tell him about Miss Watson and Jim, but then he realized if he did he would give up Jim and also get caught. He was then going to write to Miss Watson, but he thinks about it and thinks that if the story got out, he woul have helped a slave escape. he would be ashamed and looked down on by many important people in his life. After all of that, he tried to pray to God for forgiveness, but his heart just wasn't in the prayer. He also couldn't lie to god about doing bad things. Whenever he was writing the letter, he thought about Jim, the time they spent together, and how much he missed it. He missed Jim's kind heart, how their friendship had developed over time, and how they helped each other get through he hard times in their lives. after thinking about all of this and trying to figure out a way, Huck tears up the letter and decided he was going to steal Jim out of slavery. 3. I think that Huck was hoping that Tom would say he wouldn't help so that Huck could finally make up his mind. I think that whenever Tom said that he would help, Huck was hoping he would say no so that way he would have an excuse to not help. He was so distraught in the moment on whether or not he should help Jim. he was hoping for an outside opinion that would make him see reason. I think it also played into the fact that Tom always tries to fit into society with the trying to have a gang. He reads this in books. 4. That we treat each other horribly because of the things we do to try and earn money. Whenever we do it, we get mad when they treat us the same way. 5. I think this means that no matter what you do, a conscience will make you feel bad. Whenever he saw the duke and the dauphin being tarred and feathered, his ill feelings towards them started to fade away. They were just trying to make a living, and they decided to do that by conning people. But when you see that happening to someone, you would still feel guilty for not helping them. I think that no matter what the person has done, there will be a part of you that feels bad. 6. Whenever Huck came up with a simple plan to get Jim out of the shed that he was being held in, Tom said it wasn't stylish enough and came up with a more elaborate plan to get Jim out. "Tom told me what his plan was, and i see in a minute it was worth fifteen of mine for style, and would make Jim as free a man as mine would, and maybe get us all killed besides." Chapter 40-End 1. Huck feels guilty because she thinks she lost Sid which is tom. He also feels bad knowing that he's still alive, and that he helped the slave get away. He doesn't want to look her in the face because he's afraid if he does, he's going to tell her everything they did and she will be mad. She expressed so much concern for him, and the feeling of guilt is overpowering because he made her worry. He also caused trouble by helping Jim escape. Soon after this, Huck and Sally stayed up for a little longer talking about "Sid", and huck thought he was lost because of hurt. This shows that she actually has compassion for Huck and Tom, even though he his lying to this women and has done so much to help snd keep his safe. 2. Jim was so worried and guilty that Tom had gotten shot while getting him free that he was willing to sacrifice his newly earned freedom to save Tom. Jim is an extremely kind and thoughtful man. He would do anything to save his friend who saved him from slavery. The doctor found tom too injured to be left alone while he gets help, so he says that he needs help and then Jim comes out. Whenever Jim heard that, he decided that he needed to help even though it meant losing everything. Jim is faithful, and the doctor could tell he was exhausted from being worked way too hard lately. Jim was a great "nurse" to Tom. He cared for him and was helping no matter if it put his life at stake. He was a great man who helped everyone. 3. Tom wants to live a life full of adventure, and he wants people to know it was him. Whenever he dropped the bomb shell of Miss Watson passing and that she set Jim free in her will, you could see he wanted the thrill of the adventure over the reward. He knew that Jim was free, but he saw it as a way to have a safe adventure. Tom has been keeping his secrets about the death of Miss Watson, and the fact that Jim is free tells me that he will do literally anything to have an adventure which includes freeing someone who is already free. 4. Huck was extremely brave and an adventure seeking boy. From the beginning of the book, I could tell from the way he was ready and wanted to be in the band of robbers that he was very interesting and constantly sought out adventure in any and every way. He was also an extremely smart kid. Every time he was placed in a complicated situation, he found a way out of it. He even faked his own death. Lastly, he was very generous and was willing to help anyone who needed it. He helped Jim even though it put him at risk because many people would look down upon him and think differently of him. Huck in my opinion is a huge role model. .
